Many advances in AI, simulation and data science, and HPC hardware design are taking place in their respective communities – which slows innovation for all. The Hawaiʻi Scientific Data Workshop brings together experts from DOE national laboratories, facilities, universities, and industry as well as international partners. The goal of this meeting is to exchange experiences and the state of practice across silo walls, fostering new interdisciplinary, interagency, and international collaborations.
A special focus will be placed on innovative technology investments: large AI models are becoming increasingly energy hungry, with billion-parameter models consuming dozens of MWh to train. This trend is expected to continue, increasing the need for specialized hardware architectures, including quantum computing and other disruptive technologies. Therefore the Hawaiʻi Scientific Data Workshop is a venue to explore and to tape out prototypes of domain-specialized hardware (including quantum computing) and leverage the open chiplet ecosystem to integrate into heterogeneous processor designs.
Hawaiʻi is home to world-class scientific institutions, such as the Mauna Kea Observatories, and the University of Hawaiʻi. The island's unique environment, which has been impacted by devastating wildfires in recent years, underscores the importance of developing data-driven solutions for environmental sustainability and disaster resilience. This workshop will therefore provide a platform to introduce students and professionals from Hawaiʻi to national laboratories, facilities, universities, and industry, and explore opportunities for collaboration with local organizations.
